Gilbert Martinez
Gilbert Martinez, Jr., born on December 3, 1959, in Uvalde, Texas, is a distinguished figure in the world of billiards. His journey into pool began in 1968 at Don's Cue Club in San Marcos, Texas. From a young age, Gilbert’s parents supported his passion for the game, provided he maintained a "B" average in school. His father played a crucial role, transporting him to play in San Antonio one weekend and Austin the next, ensuring Gilbert learned from some of the best players in Texas.
The turning point in Gilbert’s career came when his parents bought him a pool table from Sears & Roebuck, allowing him to practice at home regularly. This new opportunity took his skills to the next level, marking the beginning of his dominance in the sport.
Gilbert quickly made a name for himself in the competitive pool scene, becoming a dominant force in Texas. His accolades include winning the Texas Open 9-Ball Championships in 1990, 1992, and 1993, making him one of only three players—alongside Bob Vanover and Jeremy Jones—to achieve three or more titles in this prestigious tournament. His success extended beyond Texas; Gilbert also claimed numerous titles on the Fast Eddie Tour and made history by winning the inaugural EuroWest Tour.
In addition to his individual accomplishments, Gilbert was a key member of the legendary BCA Champion team, the Jackson All-Stars, further cementing his status in the billiards community.
Reflecting on his induction into the Texas Billiards Hall of Fame, Gilbert humbly remarked, “It’s too soon to really know about feelings... but... being recognized by my peers feels awesome!!” This recognition underscores his exceptional contributions to the sport and his enduring impact on the billiards community.
